Summary information
Additional comments and observations about this beach Surstey is a volcanic island and the southernmost point of Iceland. It was formed in a volcanic eruption in 1963-1967. It is all the more outstanding for having been protected since its birth, providing the world with a pristine natural laboratory. In 2008, UNESCO declared the island a World Heritage Site, in recognition of its great scientific value. Access to the island is restricted, permit needed from the Environment agency.
